Wes Anderson’s color palette.

I like the Royal Tenenbaums palette best, for whatever reason, but Moonrise Kindgom was the most visually appealing Wes Anderson film I’ve seen yet.
Also, I don’t care how tired people are of the quirk – at least you know what to expect with Anderson’s movies. I loved Moonrise Kingdom because I got exactly what I wanted from it: an aesthetically pleasing, weird, kind-of-sappy movie. Sometimes you need films like that to take your mind off of your problems for a little while.

Dogfight, 1991 –
Just caught the last hour of this on the Ovation network (my new favorite channel, randomly) and remembered how much I loved this movie a few years ago. If I’m being honest, I sort of discovered it when I was going through a River Phoenix phase, something that seems like a requirement for many girls who grew up in the 80s and especially the 90s, when those of us too young to have appreciated him when he was alive were playing catchup. Anyway, though I may have found this movie for shallow reasons, I fell in love with it for the story and for Phoenix and Taylor’s great chemistry. It’s not your average feel-good love story and it’s more than a little melancholy, but it’s a great film and I’ve always considered it River Phoenix’s best work, which, of course, is saying a lot.
(And after having checked Amazon to see if I could buy the DVD, I’ve discovered it’s ridiculously expensive! Gutted. Wishing my old VHS copy of this wasn’t completely useless now…)

The news graphics and design class I’m taking has made me appreciate cool posters like this one. Simple, but effective.
